Speeding tickets are certainly not uncommon. Because of this, many people may not think they're a big deal. The truth is that they can have some serious implications, depending on why you've received a ticket and how fast you were traveling. Besides raising the cost of your insurance policy, a speeding ticket can actually land you in jail.
Can I Go To Jail For Speeding?
One of the reasons you could end up in jail is if you were driving recklessly while speeding. Going 20 or 30 mph over the speed limit would be considered reckless driving and willful or wanton disregard for the safety of yourself and others.
If you've had more than one speeding ticket recently, then you may have your license suspended. If you end up with enough points on your license, it will be revoked or suspended. Additionally, three tickets a year are enough to receive a jail sentence in some states.
On that note, if you get behind the wheel without your license because it is suspended or revoked, you could be fined and sent to jail depending on the circumstances.
It's important to know your rights if you're pulled over for speeding. Even though this is a relatively minor offense in most cases, that doesn't mean that it won't affect your life. In serious cases, you could be forced to pay high fines or lose your license. If you are speeding excessively, you could go to jail. If someone is injured because of your actions, that puts you in a position where you should defend yourself against charges, so you lower the risk of serious penalties.
